Can't stop Windows Management Instrumentation service

When applying SQL Server service packs I usually need to stop the
Windows Management Instrumentation service. Often it gets hung in the
"stopping" state and the only way to free it up is to bounce the server.
Is there a way to force it to stop cleanly? I don't always have the
luxury of bouncing the server. For example if there are multiple SQL
Server instances and I'm only patching one. I cant affect users of other
DB instances.
