Whenever my system tries to intall this update, it gets about halfway and
quits, giving simply a "failed" message. The Windows Update utility will no
longer work until this update is installed. Any ideas why this is happening
and/or how to get around it?

Windows version?

Can you install it manually via
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en ?

1. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=ph;en-us;6527

2. You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;822798

3a. Check Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) for errors
associated with the download/install.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=902093

3b. Compare errors to those listed here:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive...date_codes.htm and/or go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support link in left
pane > Solve problems on your own.

4. Windows Update Checklist:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/updtcl.htm

Thanks for the quick reply. I have spent the past few hours going through all
the stuff you supplied one-by-one. Nothing has resolved this issue.
Interestingly, I have never had problems before updating Windows (I am on
XPSP2). I keep up with all updates, security fixes, etc., and I use many
different kinds of spyware, antivirus, etc., utilities -- none of which is
finding anything amiss.j

Didn't Microsoft release this same Windows Update update a month or two ago?
If it's the same one, I could not install it, either, and learned by visiting
Microsoft's and other forums that an awful lot of people are having trouble
with this.

Package Installer for Windows v6.1.22.4 is new. Previously, each update
contained a Package Installer. 898461 gives you a permanent copy of
Installer such that future updates won't need to include it and therefore
will involve smaller downloads.

Previous posts here regarding 898461 (4 threads, not including yours):

You weren't able to install it manually using the downloaded file? Have you
tried doing so while working offline?

Does Windows Update log show any errors associated with the attempted
install(s)?

Have you tried disabling both your anti-virus application and any
third-party firewall prior to installing? Be careful! You don't want to
have any other browser or messenger windows open when doing so.

One other oddity I've noticed that might be relevant. When I go to the
Control Panel "Automatic Updates" now, all choices are grayed out. I've
looked into Group Policies and can find nothing that would cause this
behavior. Think there's any relationship between that and the problems I
(and from what I'm seeing in this forum now) many others are having?

In exploring the registry to try to figure out why the below is grayed out, I
came across a troubing discovery: When I go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE
\ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ , there is no
WindowsUpdate key. Should there be? Is this part of my problem? If I need to
create the key, what are the values that should be entered?

Thanks ...

PROBLEM SOLVED! There is a file in the Windows\System32 folder called
spupdsvc.exe. Rename this to spupdsvc.old, reboot, and try to install the
update again. It worked for me.
