OK. Here the situation. I have several Chinese names contacts in Outlook
2003 (English version) and trying to sync to my Xda IIs with Monster 2003
(4.2SE build 0816) installed.

The chinese will appears fine in outlook but when sync'ed to the Xda IIs,
the name will come up as ????

If I change the name in the Xda IIs (via handwriting input) to Chinese, the
outlook contact names will become ???? while the Xda will show the Chinese
characters correctly.

Any suggestions? This is getting very annoying.....

This is because ActiveSync since version 3.0 does not understand Unicode any
more. Totally frustrating.

Write to Microsoft and complain.

A "solution" could be: Set the system default locale of your desktop to
Chinese. But then you'll have the same problem with either short or long
Chinese or Japanese or German or French or whatever entries.

See my prior post of 11 November.

Bingo! So I changed the Language for non-Unicode programs under Regional
and language Options Advanced to Chinese (Hong Kong S.A.R.) and I can sync
the Chinese characters with no problems. However, I would hate to use this
as it messes up other non-Unicode English programs that I use........

Pretty much so... you're right, you risk totally f*ing up your system by
changing the default locale. Be careful with Outlook, your entries may get
corrupted.

I'm sorry to say this but that was it. No other option.

Complain to Microsoft.

Not that they would listen. A few years ago I got a very inspiring reply by
a program manager at Microsoft. I wonder whether that paradigma of the
bright and beautiful still works there.
