Is the Automatic Updates service started or can it start ?
*Right* click MyComputer either on the Desktop or Start Menu and choose
'Manage'.
Click on Services and Applications in the left frame
Double click on Services in the right frame.
Do the same for Automatic Updates.
Is it set to Automatic for Startup type ?
If not, set it to Automatic and then click Apply.
If it's not started, click the Start button.
Was there a 1058 error message or did the service start ?
If there was an error message than it's reasonable to assume that the
system is infected with malware.
Using Internet Explorer, have the system scanned here:
