Can't update; also IE page refresh required constantly

Windows XP Home Edition SP2, Internet Explorer
6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519

Internet Explorer keeps asking for page refresh (giving on various page
links.

Can no longer get Windows updates as keep getting 'page not available' but
by refreshing page site will come up.Can keep refreshing until I get to
'Express or Custom?' update screen but can get no further because refresh
keeps taking back to the 'Express or Custom?' page.

Followed the MS recommended links to fix the error number recieived but
none of them have resolved the problem.

It's getting so most Web sites only come up this way. After a page not
found, click refresh brings up a page. Commonly get 'server reset' messages
and downloads are interrupted.

Have run Trend Micro Housecall, Adaware, Spybot, Microsoft Defender and all
come up clean.
Disabled, and finally uninstalled McAfee Security Suite 10.

i seem to have the same problem, only i can get past the 'Express or Custom?'
page ..... but then all i get is:
Download size: 0 KB , 0 minutes (Downloaded; ready to install)
and installing it anyway only means i can wait a couple of hours for it to
install, only to get the message: "sorry, something went wrong" ... and so on
.....
well, i know this doesn't help, but at least now you know you're not the
only one with this problem ...
hope it works out soon
