Can't update, can't uninstall, Whats wrong with Windos Update v5?

Hi, Anybody know what's wrong here.
I've written before about this. I had, by a friends mistake, V5 Windows Update installed. I was told there is no way to uninstall it.

I had to manually go to the v4 Windowsupdate and it worked for some time.
Now I am redirected to v5 anyway, whatever I do.

The problem is that v5 never stops scanning my computer for updates.
Last time I let it stand there. After 9 hours it was still scanning. Cant shut down IExplorer, can't do anything. Have to pull the plug every time and run a 50 min's Chkdsk. What can I do about this? Can i Re-install that crappy V5 update and at least try to make that work?

Don't tell me to re-install Windows. I am on a travel and can't do that because I don't have a pile of all the CD's with me to re-install everything. I am also only connected via a modem for at least another 6 weeks here.

I'm sorry that this was posted twice, but I had a "Page Not Found" error when posting and Yet it WAS posted anyway.
Seems like this page is working as good as the v5 Windows Update :-\

Hi

Please try deleting the Temporary Internet Cache before going to WIndows
Update and see it this will solve the scanning issue.

Clear the Internet Explorer cache
1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the General tab.
4. In the Temporary Internet files section, click Delete Cookies.
5. Click OK in the Delete Cookies box.
6. In the Temporary Internet Files section, click Delete Files.
7. Select the Delete all offline content check box in the Delete Files
dialog box.
8. Click OK.
9. In the History section, click the Clear History button.
10. Click Yes.
11. Click OK.

Thank you

Eric

Thanks a lot Eric.
That did the trick for me. Now v5 Update work flawlessly altough it urges me
to install an old and outdated 3Com Modem driver from 2001 (!)

Thanks for Your kind help.
