Can't update Defender

I ran windows update and one update for Vista installed ok but the
definition update for defender failed with error code 0x80240019. As far as I
can tell it's not even downloading the update. I've been looking all over the
site but haven't had any luck in finding a solution.

You are not alone. I have 0x80240019 trying to D/L from WU, also from the
WDUI, I get 0x80240022.

Similar situations happen in the past. My sugestion is wait, don't worry and
don't push it. Try tomorrow or later.

Same here, just started today and ONLY involves Defender. It is a "failed
download" error -- so I'm just going to wait on it. Maybe it's a server
issue?

Same problem, just started this eveniing. Error 80244019 when trying to
update Windows Defender on Windows Vista Ultimate.

Hi,

You would need to stop your Windows Defender Service before updating the
definition. I have found that this works although I do not know if this will
be case from here on... yet.

Press and hold the Windows Logo key on your keyboard and press "R". This
will bring up your Run box, in the run box type in the following and pressing
enter afterwards: services.msc. This will open your current services. Scroll
down and look for Windows Defender, right click and select stop. After the
service has stopped, retry the updates. Remember to reboot afterwards to
implement the definition and start the Defender service again.

While Auto Updating Windows Vista Ultimate I got this message. Its related to
Windows Update 929735. It downloads okay and tries to Install but in the end
gives the message Failed to install.
If its only for Windows Defender update it should not matter much. I always
had problem updating Win Defender in Win XP Pro anyway.

Surely it worked. I may only add that after reboot don't forget to restart
Win Defender , if it has not started automatically by pressing win log and R .
