I can't update using Windows Update. I get error 0x800A1391 when trying to

An error occurs when Windows Update is unable to download and install the
Windows Update ActiveX component.

Can also be caused when a firewall blocks the download of the component.

Try adding the following sites to the IE Trusted Sites zone

http://update.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://update.microsoft.com

You receive an "Initialization error 0x800A1391" error message and the
Windows Update Web site does not appear

Tools...Internet Options....Security...Trusted Sites....Sites....either
uncheck the require server verification box or merely add an "s" at the end
of http in the site address.

I have had Activex issues for months, including this particular error which
prevented me from signing up for Microsoft Update. It also prevented me
from manually installing anything in Windows Update. The problem was also
affecting other websites that use ActiveX such as PcPitstop which hasn't
worked for me in 9 months. I was beginning to think I'd have to reformat my
disk and start over and I was dreading that.

Well, I've been working with a Microsoft Support representative for several
weeks trying to get this problem resolved. I followed all the recommended
solutions from her and from this forum: the OLEfix, IE6 adjustments to
Tools-Security-Trusted Sites, Tools-Security-Custom Level ActiveX, Java, and
Scripting, registry Edits, all of it but nothing worked. BUT AS of TODAY, MY
PROBLEM IS RESOLVED! The fix? Uninstalling and Reinstalling XP2. The
Microsoft representative sent me a couple of links to uninstall and reinstall
XP2, and that did the trick. It was time consuming, but I'm back in
business. Here are the steps I took.

1) Backed up Documents and Settings and all personal files and folders to
disk... just in case
2) Uninstalled XP2. Follow these instructions.
How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 2 from your computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];875350
3) Downloaded Windows XP Service Pack 2 (266 MB) to my hard drive

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...35-SP2-ENU.exe

This is a HUGE file. It took about an hour to download.

4) Boot into Safe Mode (w/o Networking) so no other programs are running
5) Double-click on WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe to install
The installation took about 45 minutes. Be Patient! Leave it alone and let
it do it's thing.
6) When Install is complete, hit FINISH which will reboot pc into normal mode
When desktop appears, give it a few minutes to allow your start up programs
(anti-virus, firewall, etc) to come up

The entire procedure took me about 5 hrs but it was worth it because it
looks like it fixed my activeX problems. I'm now signed up for Microsft
Updates. I can use Windows Update manually. I can go to PCPitstop now and
run the tests. So far, not one activex error.

I can't tell you how relieved I am.
