When I select windows update from the control pannel it takes me to
www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com which loads a blank page. How can I get it to
direct me to the v5 site? When I manually enter the v5 site in IE it takes me
to the iste and the updates seems to work just fine. This issues arose when I
installed SP2. Anyone else seen this before?

"Joel",

When you select Window Update from the control panel, do you mean selecting
"Automatic Updates" from the control panel, or do you mean:
1. That you see an icon that says, Windows Update, and this opens an
Internet browser that takes you to the errant web site:
www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com ?
2. That you double-click on Automatic Updates in the control panel, and when
it is open, you click on the link within the properties that says, "Your
computer will be more vulnerable unless you install updates regularly.
Install updates from the Window Update Web site."--after which you end up at
the web site mentioned above?
3. That, in the control panel, you double-click the "Security Center" icon,
and when it opens, in the Resources section, you click on the link, "Check
for the latest updates from Windows Update," after which an Internet
Explorer window opens and it it takes you again to that errant website
mentioned above.

I'm confused by your initial question, as I have never seen the 1st scenario
above. Since there is no direct icon for Windows Update, please reply back
to this posting with a more exacting description of what you meant about
your procedure in the control panel, and I will be happy to research a
solution for you.

Sincerely,

Pat,

It is actually all of the above.
1. I have an icon (global with the red, greenm blue, and yellow windows
flag) in my start menu titled 'windows update'. When I run the cursor over
it it says 'offer the latest and critical security updates, devices drivers,
and other features that are available for your windoes computer'. When I
right click and slect properties it says in target
"%SystemRoot%\system32\wupdmgr.exe" When I select this icon it opens a
browser window that takes me to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and
displays a blank page.
2. When I click 'Windows Update' in the 'see also' column in the control
panel, it is opens http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and displays a blank
page.
3. When I click 'Automatic Updates' in the control panel, and click on the
link within the properties that says, "Your computer will be more vulnerable
unless you install updates regularly. Install updates from the Window Update
Web site."--after which I end up at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and
displays a blank page.
4. I double-click the "Security Center" icon, and when it opens, in the
Resources section, I click on the link, "Check for the latest updates from
Windows Update," after which it opens http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and
displays a blank page.

If I go directly to
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co....aspx?ln=en-us it
appears to work. Although I have not seen a new update in at least a couple
of weeks and I have not received an automatic update notice in a couple of
weeks either. However, it looks like it is working and my installation
history shows I got a security update via automatic update on march 10th.

I am running windowsXP Home edition that I got with my Dell about a year
ago. I got SP2 via automatic update and that is whenI noticed the 'windows
update' application directs me to a blank page.

I really appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you so much for your help.

Pat,

One additional note, when I use windows explorer to navagate to the
c:\windows\system32\wupdmgr.exe and click on properties for the file it says
description: Windows Update Manager for NT version:5.4.2600.0. Also I noticed
a folder at c:\program files\windows update\v4 it has some text and filing
cabinate files in it, but not .exe files. Not sure if that helps or not,
but I figured more info is better.

Really appreciate your help.

Joel,

Thank you for your considered and thorough reply. This kind of response makes
it so much easier to diagnose and troubleshoot issues! In any of these varied
scenarios, when you saw the Internet Explorer window open and take you to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and then ...nothing but a blank screen, the
controls for Windows XP (v5) are not furthering you to the appropriate website:
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com.

Conventions:
- In these instructions, keys on the keyboard are wrapped, such as: <Enter>, so
an instruction of: Type: cmd <Enter> means type the three letters cmd and then
press <Enter>.
- Combinations such as <Ctrl>+<S> and <Ctrl>+<Shift>+<End> mean to press and
hold the keys in order while then pressing the last key. For example, press the
<Ctrl> key and hold, then press the <Shift> key and hold, and then press the
<End> key as if you were typing a single letter of the alphabet.

On Windows XP:
1. Close all Internet browsers
2. Click Start
3. Click Run
4. Type: cmd <Enter>
5. In the Command Prompt, type: %SystemDrive% <Enter>
6. Type or copy and paste the following: cd %windir%\system32 <Enter>
7. Type: notepad wuregit.cmd <Enter> and then confirm that you wish to create
this file.
8. Copy and paste the following text between the dotted lines into the notepad:

regsvr32 /s urlmon.dll
regsvr32 /s
regsvr32 /s
regsvr32 /s

wuapi.dll
wuauclt.exe
wuauclt1.exe
wuaucpl.cpl
wuaueng.dll
wuaueng1.dll
wuauserv.dll
wucltui.dll
wupdmgr.exe
wups.dll
wups2.dll
wuweb.dll

2. Open a single Internet Explorer window.
3. In the Internet Explorer window, click Tools
4. Click Windows Update
5. When you reach the Windows Update site, click Custom Install
6. Click Review and Install Updates
7. When presented with multiple updates, uncheck all of them except for one
update (your choice)
8. Look down at the System clock and note the time (hour and minute.) Let the
minute move forward one, so that there is no other activity associated with this
attempt.
9. Click Install. Wait for Windows Update to fail. If it succeeds, reply back
and let us know.
10. Assuming it failed somewhere in steps 4-7 or 9, Click Start
11. Click Run
12. Type: %WINDIR%\WindowsUpdate.log <Enter> (note there is no space between
windows and update, and there is no need for quotes.)
13. When the log opens, scroll down to the first line of the hour and minute you
memorized in step 8.
14. Click at the very beginning of that matching line to place the cursor there,
and press <Ctrl>+<Shift>+<End>. This should highlight the entire log from the
cursor to the end.
15. Press <Ctrl>+<C> to copy the selected text
16. Reply to this posting.
17. When that window opens, Tell us what update you attempted to install, and
where it failed from your observation. Was it simply going to the Windows
Update website, or after clicking Custom Install, or after the presentation of
possible updates, or during the installation of the update?
18. After this, on a new line, Type: Log entries follow: <Enter>
19. Press <Ctrl>+<V> to paste the copied, selected text from steps 14-15.
20. Verify the text pasted into your reply.
21. Post the reply, and we'll take a look at the failure.

Pat,

Thanks so much for your help. Before I begin, the numbering of the steps you
sent me restarted after step #8, I only point this out so that it is not too
confusing when I describe the steps I followed.

When I got to step #4 (selecting windows update in explorer) it directed me
to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and did not forward me on to the v.5
site. I did not know what to do exactly after step #8 so I just selected
'save' in the note pad window and left it open while I proceed onto steps
2-4. Because I did not get the step where I was to note the time stamp I have
pasted the log from the point shortly after I logged on. Don't worry I did
this immediately after logging on. I have to copy the log into a seperate
post because I'm exceeded the text limit for a post.

Really, really appreciate your help. Joel

Are you sure about that server name?

My DNS didn't recognize that when I checked with nslookup
It does know the implied subdomain though:

<example>
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: windowsupdate.microsoft.nsatc.net
Addresses: 207.46.249.57, 207.46.134.90
Aliases: windowsupdate.microsoft.com
</example>

Further when I tested that with telnet 80 I saw:

<extract>
<script Language="javascript" Src="redirect.js"></script>
</HEAD>
</extract>

Then when I changed my Security settings to High
(thus disabling Active Scripting) I saw:

<example>
<b>To view and download updates for your computer, Windows Update should be listed as a Trusted Site in Internet Explorer.</b>
</example>

The implication being that my Security settings for Trusted Sites
would be less restrictive and probably allow Active Scripting. <eg>

So my guess is that for some reason that redirect.js script
is not doing what it is supposed to in that case.

In order to diagnose this and refine your symptom description
I would use the Security settings Prompt feature.
E.g. doubleclick on the appropriate Security zone icon when
it is showing in the Status bar and click on Custom Level...
then change settings which are currently Enable to Prompt
Recreate your problem symptom but this time record more detail
about what is happening, including any prompts you see.
Reply Yes to all prompts to simulate the Enable actions
which would occur normally.

When you are finished testing just click on Default Level
(assuming that you weren't already using some Custom Level...
settings; in that case change the ones you made into Prompt
back to Enable)
