Can't update Win XP Home and Office XP

I haved tried to update Windows XP Home Edition and Microsoft Office XP.
It never took place. Instead, a windows opened with this message:

"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you
are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the
problem."

I followed a link for solutions and found that all of the entries included
an error code. I don't have one.

I have owned my PC for over 30 months, so the reinstall sets the system
back to some time in 2004. There have been a lot of updates since then.

While I have had an ocean of problems with XP Home, this is a new one.
(I have lost track of the number of times I have had to use System
Restore, which doesn't always work, and HP System Recovery.)

I also installed Windows Defender. It couldn't update itself.

These anomalies have occurred after a reformat and reinstallation of
Windows XP Home, hence the need for updates.

Please tell me if there is anything I can do to solve this conundrum.

BTW I connect to the Internet directly - no proxy. I don't think
proxycfg -? is applicable.

You can download the latest AutoPatcher for XP (a 300Mb download). It has
just about all the hotfixes/updates/patches/etc you'll need (since SP2 came
out - required). http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showforum=89

Windows Defender, on its own isnt sufficient for detecting malaware.

I agree. I also use ZoneAlarm Security Suite 2007. which includes
anti-spyware, plus AdAware and Spybot and I run all of them. I believe in
defense-in-depth.

Belated thanks for your response. I really appreciate it.

Because of my update problem and other Windows-related problems, I decided
to perform another reinstall. That fixed it, or at least so far.

I had never heard of Neowin or autopatcher. They could be a Godsend at work
where I run a computer room for a group of disabled veterans at the local VA
hospital. We are allowed to have only PC that can access the Internet, even
though we could use another one.

This means that every time I have to use the manufacturers system recovery
facility, the state of the system is set back to late 2004. As a result, the
Windows security downloads totals over 90MB. It takes more than a day to
finish the downloads and install them. This, taken with the updates to our
security software, knocks our Internet service out for about two days.

I have visited Neowin;s site but haven't figurer how to download the latest
Autopatcher. The June edition isn't ready to be downloaded yet. I would be
overjoyed with the May edition, but I haven't seen any way to get it. Use of
Neowin would knock more than a day off the re-setup.

I am totally new with this. Is there some reason why this wouldn't/couldn't
work?

May I also recommend using Norton Ghost to make a backup of your machine
right after you reinstall everything and patch it? That way, if it crashes
again, you can use the ghost image with all the updates already there instead
of the 2004 version. That'd save another half day and get you back up in
about 35-40 minutes.
