I'm running Windows 98 and am supposed to log in as the administrator but
can't find anywhere to set myself up as the administrator. I'm the only one
using the computer. How can I get Windows Update to recognize that I'm the
administrator

Windows 98 is no longer supported on Windows Update. All
users on W98 are administrators because the OS is not
secure.
You can find some security updates for W98, but no program
updates. You may be able to find the Windows Security
Update CD, which was put out about 1-2 years ago on EBay or
at a computer store, it has some W98 updates. You might be
able to find an upgrade from W98 to W98se. But you'd be
better off spending your money and time on Windows XP, it
will cost about the same as any W98 CD you have to buy.

W XP is secure and does have updates (SP1 or SP2) available.
XP does require administrators.

If your computer is OLD, you might be better off money-wise
[certainly operationally] with a new computer. The budget
computers for just $300 or so are far superior to what you
have now if it is 5 years old. For a $1,000 or so, you can
buy something very fast for gaming if that is your thing.

Click Start, Log Off {username}
When Windows reboots, it will prompt for a name and password.
Just enter Administrator, no password, and click OK

You can also have TweakUI do the logon for you.

Not so... In Win9X & ME, the only way to show as being administrator, is to log on as
"administrator" rather then as a user. That simple step has solved me hundreds of networking
problems between different Windows operating systems.
Even if you don't believe this, keep it in mind the next time Win9X won't network with XP or 2K.

Check your firewall settings - it's blocking WU

As Jim said..... /ALL/ users on Windows 9x systems have administrator
permissions. Only one user can be called by the name "Administrator"... but
/ALL/ users have administrator permissions. There are no provisions in Win9x
for "reduced" permissions -- everybody can do everything.

Your experience with the networking issue has nothing to do with what
capabilities exist or don't exist on the Windows 9x system, but rather with
the 'quirks' of how Windows 2000/XP systems share resources to Windows 9x
systems.

I didn't see an answer to this post that I like.

The problem: I've been using WindowsUPdate with 98SE for years. Then, a
couple of days ago, I downloaded some "Critical Updates". Now I can't use
WindowsUpdate anymore, because it says I need to be an "administrator", even
though I'm 98, not XT!

I tried the one suggesion, loggin on as "administrator", but that didn't
work either.

It wouldn't - because there is no such thing as an 'Administrator' in Win9x.
If switching off your firewall doesn't help, try going to Internet
Properties, and setting Security on the Internet to the Default - this
setting is frequently changed when updates are installed, and can prevent
the installation of the ActiveX required to run WU.

Or better, just put *.microsoft.com in the trusted zone
