I have a new Vista PC that I have had many problems with over the last
several weeks. I decided to do a System Restore to an earlier time frame
which was successful but when I attempted to do a Windows Update it was
rejectted with the words "Windows could not search for new updates" and an
error found with Code 80245003. When I click on Get Help it takes me to a
screen that shows WindowsUpdate_80245003 WindowsUpdate_dt000 and the choice
to Troubleshoot Problems with Installing Updates but when I go there none of
the suggestions seem to fit the situation.

Error message when you try to install updates by using the Windows Update Web site:
"0x80245003"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919749/EN-US/

If that doesn't help:-
Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder (it will be recreated next time you visit WU again)
You will lose your history but that's not important.

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder:
a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.
c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

On Vista, you may have to do this in safemode.

I have a new Vista PC. I did a System Restore to an earlier date to try to
fix some problems. Now I can't do a Windows Update. I get the message
Windows could not search for new updates. Error message 80245003. Also
can't update Windows Defender.
Any help appreciated.
