"Error Code: 0x80004005" error message when you install Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306081/en-us
A problem is preventing Windows from accurately checking the license for this computer.
Error Code: 0x80004005
NB: The same error number may occur during installation and/or updates

Try running the validation tool
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/h...s/default.mspx

or

Run: "sfc /scannow" command
Reboot
Try WU again
or

Go to start/run, and type: regsvr32.exe regwizc.dll
OK, then when you get the successful message then type:
regsvr32.exe licdll.dll

I had the same problem.
validation and sfc do not help, because it was possible to log in in
safe mode (without network) only :-(
replacing files from the original cd didn't help too...
so, just simple win-xp repair helped
boot from win-xp cd
on the first screen asked that we'd like to install a new win-xp
on the second screen (when windows installer fond the previouse
installation) - select "R" - repair existing installation and ask Yes
to replace some "old" or "strange" files...
