Can't update windows XP Home Edition

I have discovered that none of my automatic updates have worked since last
September. I shut off the automatic updates and tried to update manually.
The window just hangs and I have to end it with task manager.

Windows is also unable to shut the computer down. I have to do that manually
by holding the off button in for about 5 seconds. I went through the
msconfig trouble shooting process to no avail. It seems like the problems
are interrelated.

I found out also no updates sinnce like sept of 2005 even though auto updates
were turned on. I got some critical updates to install manually from update
site but now when the site is scanning for updates it locks up and I get
Error 0x80072EFD
