It could be a scripting issue. First, on the Start/Run line type in this
and then press Enter:
"regsvr32 jscript.dll"
Next, download and install this MS scripting support file:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
There could also be a problem with the required Services that enable
Windows Update. So, again on the Start/Run line type in this and press
Enter:
"services.msc"
A list of the services on your system will open. Maxmize that so you
can see the full names. Near the top will be one named Automatic
Updates. It should show as Started and as set to Automatic. If it
doesn't show that, right click it and select Properties. On the General
tab, change the Startup type: option to Automatic.
In that same list of services you will see one named Background
Intelligent Transfer Service, commonly called BITS. That one can be set
to Manual or Automatic; you definitely don't want to see Disabled there.
Just in case that is the issue, I suggest you change the Startup type:
on that one to Automatic also.
Next, download and install this update to BITS for your XP system:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Now do a Restart and (if necessary) log in to the Internet. Give
Windows Update another try.
Does it still stall while checking for the update to the controls? If
so, please open the WindowsUpdate.LOG file located in your Windows
folder. Scroll down to the bottom, copy the last 15 lines, and then
post back here, pasting those 15 lines into the body of your message.
