carbonite restore slowed the system

I purchased a new HP laptop using Vista Home Premium 32-bit with 3 gig
RAM, and it ran very well at first. However, when I restored the files
on my previous laptop's hard drive from Carbonite, the system slowed
considerably, and the hard drive is running almost continuously. Under
c:/users there are four designations: Administrator, Default, my name,
and Public, even though I am the only person designated on the computer
and I am the administrator. I am wondering if the cross listing is
causing the problem (since the one under my name was placed on the
computer during the Carbonite restore); if so, how can I fix it, and if
not, what else might be causing this? Thanks in advance...

Either turn off indexing and defrag or let it finish. That's what is
running in the back ground and slowing your machine I'd bet.

Depends what files you restored; you should only have restored data files
You should not use the Administrator Account as the default, but create your
own user account for use as default.

I dont use Carbonite but I would have thought there was an option to restore
data files to a new location, in keeping with your current system setup
