Carey Frisch ... Help!

I downloaded reset_subinacl as you suggested, and was able to then download
and install the Windows Genuine Validation Tool.

The problem is that I then downloaded KB915597 (Windows Defender) definition
update to 1.14.1315.1 and it showed a successful install. BUT, it doesn't
show as installed in Windows Defender! I went through the install 7 more
times, to no avail ... WD still shows definition 1.13.1286.1

Before someone jumps on the fact that this isn't a WD discussion group,
please note that others have posted the same thing about Windows updates
after running the reset_subinacl ... so I assume I will continue to have this
problem with all Windows Updates.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Uninstall Windows Defender, then reinstall it.
Afterward, visit the Windows Update web site.

That didn't seem to help
[1] I uninstalled WD,
[2] then reinstalled it from my CD copy,
[3] then went to Windows Update and the 1.14.1315.1 update showed a
successful install
[4] then went to WD and it shows it's been 44 days since being updated and
is at version 1.0.0.0
[5] clicking the Check for Updates button got a bubble saying "All
definitions and engines are up-to-date", but it still shows v1.0.0.0
