Catching Up on Updates

I'm starting from scratch with a new hard drive and Microsoft Update
indicates 48 updates to be installed (39 high priority). Do I need to
install all these or are some cumulative of previous updates? I am on
dial-up, is there a way to obtain these updates on CD/DVD?

An old timer trying to keep up
Thanks,

Go here http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showforum=89 and check out
AutoPatcher - it should help.

You should install all Critical Updates.
Install Service Packs first and alone.
Then install the rest.
Usually it is best to install no more than 4 updates at a time with a reboot
between each set.
Among other things, this helps to determine the cause of problems if any
show.

Install Recommended Updates only if you determine you need them.

Driver Updates...It is best not to get these from Windows Update. Instead
get drivers directly from the hardware manufacturers web site.

Jerry:
Thanks for the link. It looks like AutoPatcher 5.1 lists all the
updatews I need (and more). I think I'm over my head with this one as I
haven't run across Bit Torrent before and don't quite understand it.

I can see some saving in that the updates are all combined in
AutoPatcher - but my concern is the time it would take to download all the
updates at 28.8Kbps, and whether some updates include previous updates (so I
wouldn't have to get every update on the list).

I was hoping that a CD/DVD was available for people in my
position (so I wouldn't have to spend the many hours downloading).

Thanks,

There is no CD available unless you consider Service Pack 2.
If you do not have SP-2, order it free:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx
It is usually a week or less when you receive the CD.

Thanks for the response. I guess I've got work to do and there's no way
around it. Should I work my way up from the bottom of the list (oldest
first)?

It shouldn't really matter but that is the way I would do it anyways.

Your help has been really appreciated. What would us novices do without
such assistance.

Thanks,
