The 'category' in Windows Live, and messenger is not working. I added a bunch
of people into different categories, and they are all gone the next day. I
tried logging out and logging back in again after adding, they are still
there. But it is gone on the next day.

Greetings JC,

A few things you can try. The first is to shut down Messenger and remove the cache of
contacts stored locally as it's possible that it's not syncing them correctly.
On XP you can find this folder at:
\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live
Contacts

On Vista, you'll find it at:
\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Contacts

Where username is your Windows username. Additionally, some of these folders will be hidden
by default, to see them simply press the
Alt key on the keyboard in any Windows Explorer window to bring up the toolbar, click Tools,
then Folder Options, then the View tab, and then choose 'Show hidden files and folders'.
After click OK, they should appear with the other folders.

If that's not successful, just as a test at least, try moving a few people into the
categories over on http://contacts.live.com (sign in with your Messenger Live ID). Then see
if it sticks after a day there.

Hi, I followed your instruction, removed the cache and readded the people to
different categories. The interesting thing is, it doesn't all disappear
this time. I added 25 people to Friends category, and only 17 left today. I
have 17 people in other categories, and 14 left. I cross referenced the
names and I think the name missing are all the same.

Why?

And after several more hours, the categories are now back to 0 people.

Some information that may help you troubleshooting:
I am using MSN Live Messenger at multiple places, and mixing the version. I
am using both WLM 2009 and 8.1.0178.00 interchangeably. However, logging in
and out doesn't trigger the problem.
