Category-based sync fails in Calendar

Here's the deal: I like to make reminders (0-minute appointments) for myself
via Calendar on my PPC. I do NOT want these reminders synched up with my
corporate Outlook. To this end I created a category called No Sync and I
faithfully set it for those reminders I want to keep on the PPC only. After
doing a full sync I get a list of used categories in Options and I select to
sync only <No Category> and Holiday (the only two I've ever really used). I
leave No Sync unchecked.

HOWEVER, ActiveSync doesn't appear to give a rat's ass what I've checked; it
happily adds my No Sync reminders to Outlook and when I delete them from
Outlook it deletes them from my PPC. I've tried to "kick it" by changing to
"Sync All Reminders" and then back to specific categories, but it doesn't
work. At this point I have simply turned off Calendar sync, but there are
things I definitely want to sync up, so this is not a viable long-term
solution.

The ActiveSync category filters are one way - from the desktop to the
device. There is no filtering for the device to the desktop. If you
really want this advanced filtering, check out IntelliSync
(http://www.pumatech.com). Also check out a number of third-party
programs that allow you to set reminders and alarms outside of the
Outlook calendar, such as RemindMe
(http://www.applian.com/pocketpc/remindme/index.php).
