My W2K disc died. SMART disc warned me, but it was already too late to save
anything. So, I re-installed three times: once on the failing disc, twice
on a new disc.

I did not re-register the installation except for the last time.

When I visited the Windows update site to get SP[2-4] and the security
updates, the scan of my system failed with ERROR 0x8007000B.

I thought that was caused by not having registered the installation, but
when I registered, there was no change, and the same error continued to
appear.

My system is on a home LAN, sitting behind a firewall, and connected to the
Internet.

What causes ERROR 0x8007000B?
How do I avoid that error?

"Looking for a clue",

I'm sorry you are running into this error, but perhaps this is best so that you
can get the right update for your system. The reason I say this is: the error
you mention essentially means, "Bad Image Format", suggesting that your Service
Pack is corrupted somehow. You do NOT want SP2 right now anyway, but instead
Service Pack 4, which incorporates all previous service packs within it.

This is Windows 2000, right?

Try directly downloading the service pack and running it. Here is the direct
download site:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

1. Click the Download button
2. Choose Save
3. Choose a directory you will remember, so that you can find this download
4. As the large file is downloading, in the dialog box, uncheck the "Close this
dialog box when download is complete."
5. Once download is complete, the Open button is activated, click Open
6. Follow the prompts to install Service Pack 4

Let us know how this goes.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]
