I've always wondered but just put it down to the wonderful windows
experience.

I've just taken the laptop out of sleep and the mouse has now got the shadow
enabled (which it didnt before it went into sleep) and no one else is here
to have tampered with the settings. I have switched it off in properties as
it should have been.

So what actually causes this sort of thing to happen ???

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these
Web pages.
Help with malware:
All MS-MVP Sites.

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

All clear on last scans, did one in safe mode as well and have defender and
spybot immunised etc. all up to date.

Will do another batch of scans shortly. Just run the malicious software
remover nothing reported.

sounds like OS corruption, or probably a power setting.
change your power plan to high performance, and also update your video
card driver.
