Do you or have you had a game installed that required the CD to be in the drive
to run. Some of the copy protection schemes use rootkits and other tricks to
prevent using CD image software. They insert themselves between the CD driver
and the OS. An OS update may have changed the registry or replaced system files
that the game had replaced with its own versions. If this is the problem you
have some major googling to do to find and remove the culprit. You may also
need to re-update SP3 after cleaning.
If the game publisher has a forum start there.
