CD Drive will not read certain disks

Hi everyone.

I'm having a problem with my CD Drive (FYI, I use the term loosel
meaning "that thing into which I stick my discs". I believe that whe
it is used properly it is more specific)

Basically, when I stick a DVD or the Vista OS Disc (made by gateway
shipped in my laptop box) the laptop will read it! And I have n
problems.
But, if I try to put in *any* other disc, whether it be music, game
burned cd, it will not work.

This is what I experience.
1. I open my drive and put in the cd.
2. I close my drive
3. the Cd starts spinning/the computer is thinking. The CD icon on m
computer is flashing on and off at regular intervals.
4. When I click on my "DVD RW Drive" (which is what it's called in M
Computer), I get the error message:
> INSERT A DIS
> Please insert a disc into drive G:
> Help me choose a disc

and then my drive ejects

Note: I installed MagicDisc and use it as my virtual CD Drive.
Whether this has any bearing, I do not know. Also I have the Spiderman
Web of Shadows ISO file mounted.

Note 2: I have attached multiple images hopefully describing m
situation.
devcon.jpg shows the results of the command "devcon stack gencdrom
where devcon is the program by MS as an alternative to Device Manager.
regedit.jpg shows the registry location MS tells to delete th
UpperFilter and LowerFilter entries. Of course, they are not there.
mycomputer.jpg shows my My Computer window looks like. Error Messag
included.

My Specs:
system.jpg contains some of my specs.
I ordered my laptop off of NewEgg about 1.5/2 years ago, here is it
page:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...teway%2bMT3422
With that, I ordered extra memory (from 1GB to 2GB); its page is here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227242

I tried to be as useful as possible (I spent 30 minutes on this post!)
so that this problem may be resolved and used as a guideline for other
who experience the same thing

Hi,

The drive is likely faulty and needs to be replaced, though there is a
chance you just have a clogged lens. An optical drive uses different lasers
for reading CD and DVD media, it sounds like the one for CD media is not
functioning. You generally can't fix these if it's a mechanical malfunction,
but if it's just clogged a lens cleaner disk can help.

Alright, thank you. I didn't know that two different lasers were use
in reading DVDs and CDs
I googled and found that using a can of compressed air and/or a QTi
and Isopropyl alcohol is the best way to clean off a lens

Use 90% alcohol, not the 70%.
