I am having problems with my DvD/Cd drive, Cd drive and Floppy disk drive,
non will play or read the data on them, I keep getting the same message on
all three

"windows cannot read from this disk.the disk might be corrupted, or it could
be using a format that is not compatible with windows"

I have tried to use a restore point, did not work, uninstalled all three
drives, and then reinstalled them again, still nothing, I was going to use my
restore disk to reinstall XP again on my Dell system, but the drives wouldn't
read them either.
As anyone any idea what I should do now....Thank you for any help you can
pass on to me..

Unfortunately I don't have answers for you--I'm on here looking for similar
solutions.

After installing the latest Win 2000 updates this weekend, my optical drives
(CD & DVD) are not being recognized properly either. However, I'm getting a
different message when I put a disc in the drive. It just tells me the "disc
inserted in drive x is not formatted, would you like to format it now?"
Happens whether I put in a blank disc or store-bought software, doesn't
matter.

Just for kicks, I said 'yes' to the formatting question after clicking 'no'
every time, but it then tells me the disc cannot be formatted (and I had put
in never used blank media).

I'm hoping that someone out there may have answers for both of us, jkc! Help!

I appear to be having a similar problem:
- I place a new cd in the drive
- I get the "Open Writable CD Folder" prompt
- I click Yes
- I get a "E:\ is not accessible - Incorrect Function.

This started happening right after the install of the following:
kb893066
kb893030
kb893086
kb893059
kb890830 - shows status of "Failed" - Error Code: 80246001
MS Installer 3.1

Assistance would be appreciated or may an MS Update??????

OK, of the updates on your list, I had installed:

KB893066
KB893086

So maybe it's one of those two. I've gone back into Add/Remove Programs in
the control panel and removed all of the updates I installed over the past
day or so, but it hasn't fixed anything.

Apparently this isn't an isolated incident.
