The CD/DVD no longer works if I put a CD in the drive it says "Insert Disc" I
have not installed any new software. If I have a CD in when I start the
computer I can hear the CD spin up so I know the CD works. I have tried to
unistall and reinstall driver with no luck..

Hi...try this: go to start...then computer...*right* click...properties,
hardware, device manager...cd/dvd drive, *right* click *uninstall* the
drive, click ok, restart computer. Windows will find drive and correct
drivers upon restart. Please post back with results.

Open the case and see is the cables have come loose.
If a laptop make sure the drive is firmly seated in its bay.

You are supposed to go to the registry, find
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and delete the upper and lower
filters. See support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/314060 for complete
details. In my case, however, I cannot find the upper and lower filters. I
have attached a copy of the registry key and if someone can tell me where the
upper and lower filters are I will be eternally grateful.

That KB article (314060) is written for Windows XP, not Vista.

Check the following articles to see if any of these apply.

When you insert a CD or a DVD, Windows Vista may not recognize the disc:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939052

You may be unable to read from DVD-R DL or DVD+R DL discs that were recorded
in Windows Vista:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933207

The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected on a computer that
you upgraded to Windows Vista:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/929461

Windows Vista does not detect a DVD-R disc that was formatted two times:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948177

When you try to use DVD-Rs or DVD-RWs interchangeably, a consumer
electronics DVD player or DVD recorder may be incompatible with the DVD
drive in a Windows Vista-based computer:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931698

No wonder it didn't work. But Vista will still not recognise my DVD as a
DVD, only as a CDRom. I have tried everything suggested in this post and I
still can not get a DVD driver installed-only a CD driver. What do I do?

The article 929461 is exactly the one that you told me is not for Vista. I
cannot find the upper and lower filters.

Thanks for your very quick response, but I have applied the fixes in every
one of these articles, and my computer still insists on using a CD driver
instead of a DVD driver. I am getting ready to smash it to bits, but even
then I don't think it would help.
