CD/DVD ROM BROKE?!?! DAMN VISTA!!

Where do I start. Initially when I installed Vista Home Premium my Norton
System Works 2007 wouldn't work. I wrote them and in not so many words they
shafted me and said I needed to buy "Vista compatible software". We'll I
ordered this new program Norton 360, took 4-5 days to get here. Well I put it
in the CD/DVD tray close it, and nothing Now my drive doesn't work! I go
to the Device Manager I see "Optiarc DVD RW AD-5540A ATA Device" only it's
got some yield sign with an exclamation point on it. I right click and check
properties, and it says:

"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration
information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and
to see if there is a solution available.

So I click check for solutions and it just hangs, NOTHING! I know I haven't
give you a lot of background on my issues, but needless to say since I've
installed Vista I've had my share. I tried uninstalling the drive and
restarting it found the drive and installed it, but nothing. I've got a
laptop so I just can't disconnect it and reconnect it. Also since I just
installed Vista I don't have a Restore Point, I never set one. And Microsoft
wants $60 just to talk with them. Good lord, what am I supposed to do, can
anyone help. Please some mod look at this and save me!

Personally I would not use any of the Norton home security products. There
are alternatives, that are less resource heavy some of which are free. For
Vista the built in firewall is fine. Add and AV product such as Avast
(free), AVG (free) or NOD32. It comes with Windows Defender, and both
Ad-Aware, SpyBot S&D and Spyware Blaster (all free) work fine in Vista.

nervous deleting system registry files, but everything loaded up just fine.

I have had to remove Norton 360 on two computer during the last week. Both
users were getting a message regarding WinFax Pro every time they opened
Office Outlook 2003. It wasn't on the systems, but Semantec is the purveyor.
AVG Anti-virus, AVG Anti-spyware, Windows Firewall and Windows Defender are
now on duty.

After you delete the Norton software you will still have to run the "Norton Removal Tool", which will not remove all remnants of the software. You will still have to remove Norton/Symantec from your Program files and you will also have to delete any and all Norton and Symantec entries in your registry. There will still be some remnants left after you do all this. The only way to get Norton off your system is to do a complete uninstall and reinstall of your operating system. I also tried out the Norton 360 for Vista. Based upon my personal experiences I can tell you this: Norton security software IS NOT compatible with Vista. Their Vista compatible software is also NOT compatible with Vista at this time. You can talk with Norton via "live chat" or over the telephone but I would suggest instead that you go outside and talk to a tree or possibly
the side of your home. You won't get an answer to your questions regarding the Norton software, but then again, you won't get an answer from Norton either. When the reps at Norton can't find an answer in their training book they either put you on hold until you hang up or they disconnect the telephone conversation. If you are on "live chat" they simply close the chat session and leave you hanging out to dry.

Sorry. I forgot to add one thing. If you want to uninstall your Norton
security software you will also have to go into "services.msc" and remove the
Symantec entry there.
