CD-R/RW and DVD not there

Im running Windows ME and my computer Compac Praserio 5000 has stopped
detecting my cdr and dvd drives.
I went to the Windows update site and downloaded all the updates. didn't help.
I have disconnected the two cables from the back of each rom and removed cd
drive ribbon cable from the connector on the mother board, started the
computer then turned it off and reattached all the cables. But when I restart
still doesn't detect roms.
I have also turned off the computer and restarted. While red Compaq logo is
on I pressed the F10 key until the setup screen appeared. The only drive
listed is my Hard drive.
Hints, tips, suggestions???

If the drives do not appear in BIOS, it's not a Windows problem. Try another
ribbon cable, or try to connect one drive at a time.

I'm having the same problem. Do anyone know the solution????
