Has this just started or has this been present since you got the vaio? Have
you installed or uninstalled any video software around the time the problem
started? Do you show any upper or lower filters in your device manager?

Since handbrake is involved with the DVD drives, you might try uninstalling
it. Often though they don't remove filters they install. What problem did
you have removing the filters? There is a little program that removes them
that is listed in many sites, did you try that? Here is a program that lists
the filters and related products.
http://www.bustrace.com/products/devfilter.htm Removing all filters can
cause problems with programs you have that need them. It is best to delete
only the ones no longer needed. You can reinstall programs that need
filters after deleting them, but that can be a hassle. Good luck.

Last week another poster had the same issue concerning Code 10 that affected his DVD-RW and the following
below fixed it for him.

The below has to be followed in the order as posted

(1) Read the following and implement

http://www.pchell.com/hardware/usbcode10.shtml

(2) Now do the following fix as written in the following MS KB concerning your Lower and Upper filters. It works also on Vista
