This usually means you are either using an incorrect user ID or password to
access the newsgroups. Have you made certain the ID and password you are
using are correct? Does your password have a combination of upper and
lowercase letters, if yes, are you typing them as such?

On the other hand, authentication issues can sometimes be traced to server
issues which would mean the problem is not on your end but rather it is a
provider error.

How about the other information such as "This server requires me to log on"
and do you have their server name exactly as it should be?

If all the account setup information is as it should be, it may be a
firewall or antivirus issue. What antivirus program are you using and are
you using some firewall other than Vista's built-in firewall?

I am using Windows built in firewall and also that free avast anti virus set
at the default settings i believe...it is constantly saying that it is
updating. I have the x60 ibm thinkpad lenovo.

I do have all settings correct according to centurytel...server
auth...checked etc.

Heck I can't even sync my phone via bluetooth with vista and also can't play
bridge through msn zone vista. Glad I did not update desktop to vista.

Thanks for all your help Michael.

If your laptop is connecting through a wireless router, the wireless router
may have a firewall and that firewall may be the source of the issue. Now,
I'm not suggesting you disable that firewall but it may need to be
configured to allow the laptop access.

Interesting. I was getting logon requests for newsgroups, so I went to
CenturyTel's site. They had me setting up logins and duplicate logins,
explaining that each was for something different, but when I used those
logins, I started getting Invalid Username errors. I tried to go in as
a new user and it complained that that name was already in use. Their
logins have required "@centurytel.net" and without over the past year or
so.

The service is otherwise great. It is just their authentication system
that is flakey.

ok, unplugged the router, same problem, no errors, just keeps asking me for
user id and password....spent another hour on the phone with centurytel and
no fix.. I have tried everything that I can find on the internet about this
and one other person had the same problem with another isp. It would ask
the same thing it ask me time and time again....user id and password....i
get no further than that.

I have checked and recheked everything. Nothing in the knowledgebase of
microsoft.

I have also disabled all security stuff.....no difference...it still ask for
user id and password repeatly.

I am at a loss as to what to do next. I did call Vista and they wanted
79.00 for an answer which would probably be a standard hardward problem lol.
I got a brand new x60 thinkpad.

tks mary
