certain updates consistently failing to install, even after SP2

Here is my problem; I hope someone can help me with it:
This computer runs WinXP Home. I was having trouble using Windows Update
because all updates would download but not install. I tried updating to SP2,
but it failed. Then, following the advice of Torgeir Bakken in these fora, I
downloaded SP2 from MSDN and installed it without a problem. But even now, I
am getting only some updates to install through Windows Update. Certain
updates (high priority ones) - KB893086, KB888302, KB873333, KB891781,
KB888113, KB873339, KB885836, and KB885835 - are consistently failing to
install, right from before SP2. I suspect that the system might be reading
some old log and not allowing the updates to install. I would be much obliged
if someone could give me some idea.

I forgot to mention that this machine is free from any spyware, malware etc.
(I checked) and I also turned off Norton Antivirus (all instances) prior to
installation of the updates. But it still did not work.
