Change or add editor for file types ?

I've found the "Default Programs" "Set Associations" control panel in Vista
that enables me to set the default application to open a particular file
type but where's the equivalent of the XP feature to select a particular
editor to edit a file type that's different from the default program to open
the file?

Or do I have to go delving into the registry to do it by hand

Right click on the file and select open with. If the program is not there
browse for it. Then tick always open with this program if you wish to make
it the default.

He said he wants to change the other context menu items, and not the default
Open action.

He'll have to edit the registry manually, or use something like File Type
Doctor, which is unfortunately not free.

I just tried it. I cannot understand why there are multiple entries for
many file types, and then at the same time most of them seem to be, missing
altogether. For the file types that it does display, it only seems to allow
changing Open and Edit, and does not show you what the current existing
entry is.

I've been looking for a free alternative to File Type Doctor for at least 16
months. It can't be that difficult to make something as good as that, as
all it is is an interface to those keys in the registry.

Hi Peter,

Well I have to agree and as to why?, oversight perhaps or something they
felt wasn't needed. Anyway $18.00 isn't to bad for File Type Doctor and the
other utilities come with Creative Element Power Tools.
