Change in behavior in Windows XP SP2 Automatic Update

Hello All,

I'm running Windows XP Pro on multiple machines and have Automatic
Updates set to download but NOT automatically install. Recently, I
have noticed a change in the behavior of this software. In the past, I
would see a small yellow shield icon in the taskbar indicating that
there were updates ready to be installed. When I clicked on it, I
would get a window asking if I wanted Express or Custom installation.
Choosing custom permitted me to view the updates to be installed.

Recently, I noticed that one of my systems was set to install updates
when I turned off the computer and gave me the option to shutdow w/o
installing.

This morning, I fired up my laptop and watched while it downloaded
updates (had the shield) but was never informed that they were ready to
be installed and never given the option to review the updates. I then
did a START -> Turn off Computer and there was the icon informing me
that software would be installed when I turned off the computer.

As this has occurred on three different machines, I can't see how it
was anything I might have done (ie, a configuration settings change...)

My questions then are:

1. Is this a change in the Automatic Update Software?

2. Can I restore the original behavior?

3. If not, is there anyway that I can review the items to be installed
and permit/prohibit them?

Thanks,

Hi;

No changes in the WU/MU/AU software lately. Sounds as though someone has
used the Wuau.ADM module in the Policy Editor to adjust the behavior of AU.
If you aren't the System Admin for those computers, suggest you check with
the person who holds that office. If you are that person, take a look at
the Wuau.ADM settings for the policy-driven behavior on how the "install and
shutdown" method is deployed.

Just a WAG.
