Yes this is by design. Although normal links sent through Messenger will open in Firefox.
I've not actually tested this but Stuffplug (including the latest release) has a feature to
allow this to happen. You can find StuffPlug here:

The exact option can be located after installing StuffPlug by opening up the main Messenger
window, clicking the Stuffplug logo (the white circle thing), choosing Options, and choosing
the "Open all URLs in default browser" checkmark, then clicking OK.
