Change the default location of temporary download location

Is it possibly to change the default location of where files are downloaded
to when you click on a downloadable link and then just select open. The
default behaviour is to just download these files to something like:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\2M8XXXCV

However, it has happened that someone that did not realize that this is
where the file is download to, (i.e. they thought it was safe and went on to
modify it) was subsequently deleted when the temp folder became full.

I thought that the registry value should control this location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Download Directory

however, this value seems to be ignored.

It would be very useful to have some separation between generally cached
Internet files and specifically downloaded files, as the backup service that
I subscribe to does not allow backups from this location, which I can
understand as it would end up backing up every cached page that was visited.

Any advice appreciated.

Regards,

Philip Murphy

Kai,

Thanks for the reply. I know where the files are been saved and that I can
just change the location manually to a different location. However, this is
not my enquiry.

My question is, (not to be smart) but to restate, is it possible to specify
the default location of where downloaded files will be saved when the user
presses the Open button on the 'File Download' dialog of Internet Explorer?

Both saving a file (to a specific location) and editing it, and just opening
it (which will save it to a temporary location) and editing it, is really the
same thing in terms of security. Unless you know the source of the file you
cannot be guaranteed of its integrity i.e. opening a file is always a risk
unless you can trust the person that provided it to you.

Philip Murphy

Thanks, but this setting controls the Save/Save As location when downloading
files, but not the location when you select the Open button on the File
Download dialog.
