The usual way is to right click the icon, choose "Properties" and click the
"Change Icon" button. Some apps might not allow the direct icon to be
changed; you can then create a shortcut, to the application and change the
shortcut's icon using the above method.

The standard Internet Explorer shortcut is a special shortcut (as
you've no doubt discovered) and there is no easy way I've found to
change the icon. However, you can create a new shortcut to
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" and then you can
change the icon to whatever you like, and then remove the old Internet
Explorer shortcut.

Then either you're doing something wrong or you phrased your question
incorrectly.

Or else I'm wrong.

As Zaphod points out, the preexisting shortcut is special, and what I did
as a test was on a newly made shortcut.

Ignore me (or call me names) and listen to Zaphod. Who says make a new
shortcut :-)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion
Explorer \ HideDesktopIcons \ NewStartPanel
*{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D} *value=
Then creat a shortcut and change the icon of my choice

I know it is right ther

If you are asking me (it's hard to tell since you didn't quote any
prior posts), then what I meant was much more simple - I meant for you
to manually remove the special desktop icon for IE, and create a new
one with your desired icon. But you seem to be wanting something
different than I (and others) initially understood from your original
post. You might try the methods described here -
http://www.brighthub.com/computing/w...les/32735.aspx -
the first method is the one I suggested, but the second may be more
what you are looking for. He does note that you can no longer change
the default icon in the registry using the method you describe.

Good luck.
