A friend's very small business has a flat domain, e.g.; smallbiz.com. They
want to migrate to something like local.smallbiz.com for internal use and
retain their public IP and FQDN of mail.smallbiz.com. Can this be done? My
guess is they'd have to demote the 1 and only DC, delete the domain
smallbiz, then re promote the server to DC and this time name it
local.smallbiz.com. One potential complication is they've got exchange 2008
running on smallbiz.com. Will the above process work? Will it break
exchange?

Thanks,
Bob

Does this involve Small Business Server 2003 or 2008. Did you mean Exchange
2007?

oops, pardon the confusion. They've got windows 2008 standard x64 (I.e. not
SBS) and Exchange 2007.

Hello Bob,

As Exchange 2007 doesn't support domain rename you have to remove Exchange
2007 complete and then you can rename the existing domain to the new name.

So for Exchange 2007 you have to export all mailboxes to .pst files, remove
it from the domain and after rename install Exchange 2007 again and import
the mailboxes back.

Best regards

And of course you'll need to rejoin all the computers to the new domain and
migrate user profiles.
If you still want to keep to this plan, it's best to create the new domain
in parallel and migrate resources from the old to the new domain.

PS: a better name will be smallbiz.local.
