The default option for shut down is "Sleep". How can I change the
default to, for example, "Shut Down"?

Go to Control Panel, System and Maintenance, Power Options.

Under Power options, click on Change Plan Settings

Click on Change Advanced Power settings

Expand Power buttons and lid

Expand Start Menu power button

Change Setting from "Sleep" to "Shutdown" or "Hibernate" as desired.

Press Apply

Press OK to exit.

If it all gets messy, use the "Restore plan defaults" to get back tp a known
configuration.

Hope it helps,

If you mean the default button that you find after clicking the Orb:

Control Panel (classic view) > Power Options > Change Plan Settings
(under your power plan) > Change Advanced Power Settings > Power Buttons
and Lid > Start Menu Power Button > Setting (choose "Shut Down")

I assume the question was how to change default from sleep to shutdown. I
would like to. I get as far as step 4 okay but there is no "expand power
buttons & lid " choice at step 5.

Oops. I meant I can do the first 4 steps. Then there are 3 places to "change
plan setting". Under each of these there is a "change advanced power
settings". But no "expand power buttons & lid comes up".
