Hi Jilli,
Well, you'll need to change your BIOS settings so that the computer tries to
boot FIRST from your optical CD/DVD drive rather than from your hard drive
or floppy drive.
Make sure you have the Windows installation CD in the optical drive and boot
up your PC. You'll need to carefully watch your monitor to see what's
happening. As it's going through POST -- the Power On Self Testing -- or
immediately after you should a message such as "Press Any Key to Boot off
the CD" (or something like that). You'll have about 5 seconds to press some
key on your keyboard to enter the XP installation. If you miss the 5 second
time frame, let your machine finish booting, and once you're at the desktop
reboot and try again.
Once you ARE in the XP installation screen you can follow the prompts to
format your hard drive, create partitions, and perform the XP installation.
Let us know how things go.
