Greetings,

Does anyone know how I can change the default program that opens when you
right click -> edit a file. Specifically I am attempting to edit a html file
that by default opens Word as the editor, I want notepad to be the default
editor for html files. In Windows XP this was under folder options -> file
types -> advanced, but I can't find it in Vista. I see where to change the
default program that Opens a file, but not the default program to Edit a file.

Thanks in advance for any help you are able to give,
Screwtape

I get "The Knowledge Base (KB) Article You Requested Is Currently Not
Available" when trying to access that link.

Thanks.

Hello,

this is very weird. I'll tell you myself then:
Run regedit.exe -> locate the key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HTMLFILE\SHELL\EDIT\COMMAND .
And then double-click (Default) and type notepad.exe

I hope it works now.

Greetings,

That worked like a charm. It's pretty bad that they make you edit the
registery now instead of having a idiot-friendly menu to choose these things
from, hopefully that feature can get re-added in a future update to Vista.

Thanks alot, I appreciate your help,
Screwtape

This may interest you as well:

Adding an HTML Editor entry to the registry and set as the default:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/htmleditor.htm

The script that you download to add your program to the registry (so that it
appears in Tools > Internet Options > Programs tab) is written for XP, but
the Registry key it edits also exists in Vista.

Hi

Why not add your favourite editor or any other program to your right click
menu

To add to SendTo right click.

Press “Start” type shell:sendto This goes to sendto folder.
Find the program you want (eg notepad) it is in accessories. Right click on
Notepad and hit copy.
Bring the sendto folder into focus and right click paste.
Worked perfectly.

Why not go to "Tools"

"Internet Options"
then "Programs"
under "HTML editing" click on the down arrow to change the Program to use
HTML.

Quicker then using the regedit
