changing DNS zones

I don't know how this happened but the zone for my domain (domain.int) has a
red X next to it and when you click on it the box to the right says "the DNS
server encountered a problem loading the zone. The zone file may not be found
or the zone data is corrupt.". If I remove DNS as a role from this box (my
DC) then re add it will it recreate my zone?

Instead of attacking your problem with a sledgehammer, why not try first
investigating the things mentioned in the error message?

That's grreat, but the message doesn't indicate any course of action. The
file it references (mydomain.int.dns) exists but has nothing in it.

Let me rephrase my original question:
If I remove the DNS role from my server (and only DNS server) then reboot
can I atleast log back into that server as domain admin and readd that role
and, if so, will it recreate my domian object as well as the _msdcs stuff?

Re-installing DNS may not necessarily help.

Are we talking about DNS running on a Domain Controller? Or a
stand-alone box?

Have you tried deleting the zone? I guess that fails?

If the zone stored in AD is corrupt the problem will come back
immediately after you add the service back onto the server.

It can be forcefully deleted from Active Directory (ADSIEdit is the
normal tool of choice for this), that should let you start the zone from
scratch.

Do you need instructions to attempt that (assuming it is AD integrated)?

So what do you think, given that, is the error and the corrective course
of action to take? Whilst the rest of us wait for the penny to drop,
you can read the event log entries written by your DNS server service —
but only if you want the penny to cause a real smart when it drops. (-:

I don't suggest removing or deleting anything as yet. Let's figure out what is going on. The first thing to do is look at the event viewer. What errors do you see. Please post the EventID# and Source names of any errors you see in any of the event logs.

Also, this could be caused by a DNS lookup issue to begin with. If the DC is using an ISP's DNS address, this will cause it. Also, if the DC is multhomed (more thanone NIC, IP address, and/or if RRAS is installed on it), a Disjointed Namespace, as well as a single label name AD DNS domain name, will all cause this error. To diagnose or determine if any of these are the cause, it will be helpful to see an ipconfig /all (try not to hide the names, please).

This info will help diagnose the problem.
