Changing the edit association for a file type

Is there any way to change what program Vista launches when I click the
"edit" option on the Explorer context menu? For example, when I click
"edit" for a jpeg file it launches the Windows Photo Gallery, whereas
I'd like to launch PaintShop Pro.

Hi Ray,

Edit only launches the program that you have associated to that file
extension. You can use Default Programs to change the "Current Program"
that is associated to the file extension. See method two in this
tutorial for how. Just select the .exe file for Paintshop Pro instead
of Windows Photo Gallery.

In Win 2000, you could specify different programs for the open, edit,
and print functions (and others as well, I think). An example of the
same idea in Vista is a .bat file, which opens with the command
processor, but uses Notepad for editing. That's what I'd like to do
for picture files -- two different programs to open and edit.
PaintShop takes too long to start up for casual viewing, so I want to
use Photo Gallery to open files, but PaintShop to edit them.

I'd also like to change the default editor for .bat files to something
else. But from what I've found via Google, the only way to do that in
Vista is by editing the registry.

Thanks. That's not quite what I was looking for, but it gives me an
idea of where to look in the registry if I decide to use brute force.

I'm sorry, I do not know of any way to do this in Vista. I hope you
find a way.

right click on a file -> open with -> browser for paint shop pro executable
file -> save the settings.
Next time you use the open with function, you'll see a list of programs
directly in the context menu:
photo gallery
paint shop pro

I like to edit the context menu to do certain things too, like to Edit HTML
files with Dreamweaver, instead of stupid Word, for instance.

Without the Advnaced File Types tab in Vista, the best replacement I have
found is not free, and it comes with some useless stuff as well, but the
File Type Doctor component is a very good replacement for the lost tab.
