Manually changed a file's extension (the 3 characters after the dot)
doesn't change the file type, or the format in which it was saved. All
you've accomplished is to tell WMP that these allegedly "*.mpeg" files
are corrupted (as they're clearly *NOT* .mpeg formatted files) beyond use.
To truly change the file type, you'll need to open all of these files
with whatever application was designed to open them, and then "Save as"
*.mpeg, to create a new copy in the correct file format. And this, of
course, assumes that said application has the capability of converting
the file type.
