Greetings Jason,
@Hotmail accounts are considered "special" and although they've done work to allow you to switch to one, they've never created a way to switch from it back to your own address. Indeed the latest Live ID wizard doesn't even allow you to use your own address anymore. If you log into Hotmail, choose Options at the top-right, then More Options, and then choose Forward mail to another e-mail account, you can have it sent to another address. -- Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger MessengerGeek Blog: http://www.messengergeek.com Messenger Resources: http://messenger.jonathankay.com (c) 2008 Jonathan Kay - If redistributing, you must include this signature or citation -- "Jason" <> wrote in message news:5AE8E423-05ED-4015-BA7A-... > Quite a while ago I changed my Passport (now Live ID) email address from my > ISP email address to a Hotmail account. I suppose that's an answer, but I'm not sure it answers the "why" part ...
I'm not sure "special" explains why they're different. At any rate, the mail forwarding is a good suggestion, but now I encounter this ... "You can forward your mail to one other e-mail address that ends in hotmail.com, msn.com, live.com, or custom domains." Why am I limited in what email account I can forward to?? This seems like I'm just being penned in and inconvenienced for no good reason. Hi Jason,
Oh right, I forgot about that restriction. My apologies. It's limited I guess because those domains Microsoft/Hotmail controls on their own end. Hi this is a message specifically to Johnathan Kay (sorry I didn't kno how else to contact with this subject in mind ... !!). You stated that if you changed your live ID that you needed to stay of the system for atleast 8 hours for the system to update. Because thi was not mentioned in the ID change ( as i remember .. !!) I did indee connect and have a list of contacts that are all offline ( even though know some of them are not..!!) I have done the export import routine and still have a list of offlin contacts My questions is, does the upgrade routine to the existing list o contacts automatically restart after a specific time of being off lin or do i have to re start the whole upgrade process again ... ! I hope you can help, and this makes sense but if you need any furthe info then please do not hesitate to contact me via this thread Cheers Alex Kay :sarc -- Finalizer50 |

Hi there,
Actually this time it didn't matter that you signed in, as the feature (as of last month) is completely broken. At this point until it's fixed, I recommend you switch your Live ID back, then sign back in using the old ID and you'll find all your old contacts back online safe and sound. -- Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger MessengerGeek Blog: http://www.messengergeek.com Messenger Resources: http://messenger.jonathankay.com (c) 2009 Jonathan Kay - If redistributing, you must include this signature or citation -- "Finalizer50" <> wrote in message news:... > > Hi this is a message specifically to Johnathan Kay (sorry I didn't know > how else to contact with this subject in mind ... !!).. > > You stated that if you changed your live ID that you needed to stay off > the system for atleast 8 hours for the system to update. Can I say, this is a ridiculous process, but I have managed to change my email address successfully and without my contacts having to do anything:
I followed the process on http://account.live.com before going to bed one night after logging out of Messenger, then logged in the next morning using my new email address. All contacts were still offline and grayed out (a lighter grey than you'd expect). Through trial and error I realized that if you delete a contact and re-add them they will still be offline (awaiting authorisation) but the contact never receives a request for approval of the new account. HOWEVER, if you delete a contact, start the process of adding them by clicking ADD A CONTACT, then enter their email address in the "Enter the person's information" screen, click NEXT and then CLOSE the 'Send an invitation to...' screen (do NOT hit SEND), that contact is back on your list and will be visible as online (if they are online). In other words, DON'T SEND AN INVITATION when re-adding a contact. I found that by exporting the list of contacts to a .ctt file (Show Menu -> Contacts -> Save instant messaging contacts) you have a proper list of email addresses to work. I deleted every contact on my list and then started re-entering from this list. It took forever but my contacts all see my new email address and I'm back on track. Hope this helps. Greetings Andy,
Thanks for taking the risk and the feedback. I have to admit I'm disappointed that over a year later, this still hasn't been really fixed. I have to admit I'm not quite sure what happens when you follow the process you've described, but I certainly don't consider it a bad thing if it works. Amusingly in the latest version of Messenger 2009, they have removed the save instant messaging contacts feature, which would make this far more tedious (although you can still export your contacts via the Windows Live People website, but in slightly less usable formats). -- Jonathan Kay Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Messenger MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger MessengerGeek Blog: http://www.messengergeek.com Messenger Resources: http://messenger.jonathankay.com (c) 2010 Jonathan Kay - If redistributing, you must include this signature or citation 4 days to go! -- "Andy Canestrari" wrote in message news:... > Can I say, this is a ridiculous process, but I have managed to change my email address > successfully and without my contacts having to do anything: > > I followed the process on http://account.live.com before going to bed one night after > logging out of Messenger, then logged in the next morning using my new email address. I had the same issue and found this thread. Thanks Andy for you suggestion - I started doing that but got sick of it! Stumbled across a quicker/easier way. Simply open a conversation window for a user, then delete them from your contact list. The contact status in the message window will change to 'Add to contact list'. Click this and a few seconds later their status should correctly update. Much quicker! Can I say, this is a ridiculous process, but I have managed to change my email address successfully and without my contacts having to do anything: I followed the process on http://account.live.com before going to bed one night after logging out of Messenger, then logged in the next morning using my new email address.
