Changing the quality of files already ripped. (ripping them again)

I'm ripping my CD's again to change the quality of the files. Sometimes the
files will overwrite the old files (as I expected), but sometimes they are
not. When they are not overwritten the file name has the number 2 appended.
For example the original file might be called "If I fell.wma" and the new
file "If I fell(2).wma"

Anyone know how I can make sure the file is always overwritten? I don't
really want to delete the files before I rip, because then they will be
removed from my playlists.

Thanks,
Col.

Additional info I forgot to add:-

WMP 11, XP Pro SP2. Also, I just did another CD that seemed to be going ok.
I checked when it was done and found that on just one track WMP had not
overwritten the file. The other 13 were ok!
