I have Volume Licensing Windows XP and wish to change it to a
private/individual license since PC is not longer used for work with the
employer who supplied it and I need to install my owned private XP.
According to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328874/en-us, "How to change
the Volume Licensing product key on a computer that is running Windows XP
SP1 and later versions of Windows XP" I can change from one Volume Licensing
product key to another but I don't understand whether I can also be used to
change to it for my own private XP key... Is this procedure applicable in my
situation?

Hi,

I'm pretty sure you need to do a repair install of the OS to switch
from a VLK license to a OEM or retail version.

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install

If you have a OEM version of WinXP, also read the section "Do a Repair
Install" under FAQ number 18 ("I need to change my XP Product Key")
here:

If the computer have SP2 for WinXP installed, the OS CD you do the
repair with should also have SP2 included. If it does not, you can
create a new OS CD yourself with SP2 included, by slipstreaming SP2
into your OS CD.

Use AutoStreamer or nLite to make the process pretty easy.

Thank you - very helpful!

May I ask a simple question:
if I install XP on two partitions of same hard-disk, will each installation
have its own partition as C: drive, or is there a limitation that in XP
there's ever only one C: drive and the other XP installation (on second
partition) will have to use D: as its system drive?

Hi,

Unless you use some 3rd party boot menu utility that can be configured
to hide partitions, you will end up with the second OS installation on
D: (should not be a problem).

Hmmm...
If the second partition is a primary partition and set active prior to
the start of the installation setup will assign the C: to it.
Or, simply speaking: when installing from scratch the active primary
partition will always be C:
There's no need to tamper with 3rd party boot managers or to hide
partitions; you'll but have to insert a line for every other NT into
the BOOT.INI (just add all lines of the [Operating Systems] sections
of all @:\BOOT.INI files to every new C:\BOOT.INI).
