"Chris",
I am sorry you are running into this problem. There is a data bit that is
set for the purposes of running chkdsk, so that the file system can be
preserved. Is it possible at all for you to tell it to go ahead with
chkdsk? If so, do that. If not, try to go in under safe mode, but this
will likely have no difference at all.
If you do not want to waste too much time on it, take out the hard drive and
get a friend to allow you the use of their Windows XP box. Install the
drive as a secondary drive and run chkdsk on the volume right after that
system assigns it a drive letter. This way, you can run a chkdsk scan
across the volume and free it up to install again on your own PC.
Write back and let us know how this goes.
Sincerely,
Pat Walters [MSFT]
