I'm running Windows Live Mail v 2009 build 14.0.8064.0206 on an x86 laptop
Windows 7 Home Premium. I just did a clean install of Windows 7 Home
Premium on an x86 desktop. I downloaded Windows Live Mail to the desktop,
signed in and got the "you don't have an inbox yet" message. How do I fix
it?

If you did not use the 'migwiz' utility to migrate your settings from the
prior OS, you have no Inbox until you set up an email account in Windows
Live Mail.

Did you just create the Live ID used for signon ?

If so, logon at account.live.com, answer the verification if prompted to finalize ID creation and if a Hotmail/Live.com address go
to mail.live.com to complete the Inbox setup.
Close IE
Open WLM
Signon to Windows Live with that same Live ID
Add the Live ID account in WLM
If a Hotmail account, download the folders when prompted.

Signing in is not required to use WLMail as an email program.

Did you mean to say that you started WLMail and you got the "you don't have
an inbox yet" message?

To ensure we all understand..
Windows Live Mail(WLM) was downloaded from download.live.com and installed on Windows 7.
WLM was opened and signed on to Windows Live with your existing Live ID account.
Your existing account is an
a. Hotmail type account(hotmail.com, live.com, or msn.com)
b. Third party email account registered as a Live ID
You added the email account in WLM in one of the following ways
c. Setup [a] as a Hotmail http account or Pop3 account
d. Setup [b] as a Pop3 or IMAP account using the settings provided by the provider of that account(not Hotmail settings)

You can logon at account.live.com and no verification prompt is present after logon.
You can access contacts.live.com
If a Hotmail account you can access your Inbox at mail.live.com

Comments appreciated, respond inline..

What is an "existing live account"? Windows Live Mail is a desktop
application, not an account. On a "clean install" of Windows 7, it will have
no account information until you add it. You have to supply the account
information to Windows Live Mail, or it does not know about any accounts;
but WLMail is not an "account" unto itself, it is just an application.

Sorry but I'm confused. I have a windows live account. Once I sign in, I
see a mail tab. Isn't that independent of the pc I'm on?

Thanks for the reply.
Hope this helps to explain more clearly.
Yes, downloaded from download.live.com and installed on Windows 7 Home
Premium
Yes, signed on with an existing Live ID account
Not sure how to answer your next question. Assume b & d - accounts are
charter.net and gmail accounts. My Vista (x86) to W7 upgrade works fine.
Yes I can logon at live.com with no verification required
Yes I can access my contacts
It is not a hotmail account.

That makes two of us.

> I have a windows live account. Once I sign in, I see a mail tab. Isn't

"Windows Live" is a suite of services, some with corresponding clients.

"Windows Live Hotmail" is an email service, accessed either with a web
browser, or an email client.

"Windows Live Messenger" is an instant messaging service, with an
associated client.

"Windows Live Photo Gallery" is a photo management service, presumably
with an associated client.

"Windows Live Writer" is a composition service, presumably with an
associated client.

"Windows Live Movie Maker" is video clip composition service, presumably
with an associated client.

"Windows Live Mail" an email client, which can access a Windows Live
Hotmail account, or any other email account.

Because this group is designed for discussion of Windows Live Mail, I
should probably assume you are speaking of Windows Live Mail. But I use
Windows Live Mail to access a couple of Windows Live Hotmail accounts, a
couple of AOL IMAP accounts, a Gmail IMAP account, a Fastmail IMAP
account, an 'at&t Yahoo! HSI' email account, and a couple of local (server
in my garage) IMAP accounts. It simplifies matters if you specify what
type of account you are having troubles with: POP3, IMAP, or HTTPMail (the
last being "Hotmail").

Ditto. I am speaking of windows live mail. I have an existing windows live
account and use windows live mail (not hotmail) to access charter.net and
gmail.com email accounts. To do so I have to log into the windows live
account. I use the same log in to access live sync, sky drive and similar
live applications. The problem is that when I sign into my windows live
account on a computer other than my laptop -- even though I have installed
the windows live suite on that computer -- I cannot access my windows live
mail (which includes my charter email, my gmail, my newsgroups, my
contacts, my calendar, etc.) On the laptop it works fine on the desktop it
tells me I have no inbox.
