Winston, minor update. On the offending desktop pc (clean w7 install) I
have uninstalled and reinstalled the live suite including mail. Now I can
sign in to live mail. However, all pull down menu options other than "New"
(Compose) are grayed out. I can compose. There is a link to add email
account in the left pane. I tried that. First page is address, password,
name to display. I complete that, hit "Next" and the second page (ports,
authentication, etc) comes up. Problem is "Cancel" is the only option.
"Next" is grayed out. I tried changing some fields. Also tried manual
setup of the email provider parameters. Same result. Can only cancel from
page 2. Seems to me I shouldn't even have to add accounts, but that my
accounts should already be tied to my sign in and show up. Am I wrong?
Ideas?

Yes, you're wrong. You must add at least one mail account.

Thanks to all for sticking with me. I have mail working on the second pc
now. Also calendar and contacts. From what I see, it looks as if I also
need to re-setup Feeds and Newsgroups. If that is not correct, pls let me
know.

Does anyone know if it is possible to use a thumb drive to transfer these
settings from pc to pc?

If not and if anyone from Microsoft is reading this could I suggest that a
profile (mail accounts, newsgroups, feeds, etc.) be retained online so that
it is transferrable from pc to pc dependent only upon appropriate sign in.
It could be encrypted if privacy is a concern. With Sky Drive offering
25gigs, this would seem to inconsequential from a storage standpoint anyway.
I love the Live suite, but going through setup again and again from pc to pc
is pretty inefficient

I use this free third party utility to clone my WLM setup from PC to PC:

http://www.staticbackup.com/windows-live-mail-backup/
http://www.staticbackup.com/products.htm#swmbf

It doesn't transfer contacts, but you can easily have the automatic
syncing take care of that if you sign-in with the same Live ID.

Calendar and contacts are a result of signing in.
Signing in is not going to let you see the email accounts setup on your
other pc.

Email will only download to one pc unless both email programs are set to
leave a copy of messages on the server.
Messages in sent items on the laptop will not be seen on the desktop.

Hotmail accounts and messages will be available on both pc's if both WLM's on each machine have the same Hotmail account setup
using the Http protocol.

If that same Hotmail account (Live ID) is used to sign on to Windows Live, then each machine will also have access to the same
contacts and calendar.

Feeds in WLM are 'fed' from IE

Newsgroups need to be setup on each machine(each newsgroup account in WLM can be exported to a *.iaf file and imported into WLM on
another machine).
