If you are using AutoUpdate, does the computer only check for updates
each time you turn on the computer, or does it check every few
minutes?

P.S. I have XP sp2 and haven't gotten any updates and it's 8:05PM
which is weird.

That would depend upon how you're set it up
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

I got notification this morning, clicked to download the updates and haven't
seen the yellow shield since.

Just be patient, there are a few updates and many wanting them.

I'm set at "Notify me but don't...."
hence I can't select a time of day.

Check your windowsupdate.log as to when it last checked.

Otherwise just be patient or in the alternative, do a manual scan (although
that puts everyone else waiting for AU back in the queue).
